Screech Owl House Plans: How to Build a Home for These Fascinating Birds of Prey

Screech owls are small, nocturnal birds of prey that are found throughout North America.
They are known for their distinctive calls and their ability to adapt to a variety of habitats,
including forests, woodlands, and even suburban areas.
If you want to attract screech owls to your yard, one of the best ways to do so is by providing them with a suitable nesting box.
In this article, we will provide you with some screech owl house plans and instructions on how to build one.
Materials and Tools Needed
Before you begin building your screech owl house, you will need to gather the necessary materials and tools. Here's what you will need:Materials
- 1 piece of untreated lumber, 1" x 10" x 8'
- 1 piece of untreated lumber, 1" x 8" x 8'
- 1 piece of untreated lumber, 1" x 6" x 8'
- 1 piece of untreated lumber, 1" x 4" x 8'
- 1 sheet of exterior-grade plywood, 1/2" x 2' x 4'
- 1 box of 1 1/2" exterior wood screws
- 1 box of 1/2" exterior wood screws
- Wood glue
- 1" diameter dowel rod, 12" long
- Paint or stain
Tools
- Circular saw or handsaw
- Power drill
- Jigsaw
- Screwdriver
- Hole saw, 3" diameter
- Sandpaper
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cut the lumber to size Using a circular saw or handsaw, cut the 1" x 10" x 8' board into two 17" long pieces for the front and back of the box, and two 8" long pieces for the sides. Cut the 1" x 8" x 8' board into two 9" long pieces for the roof. Cut the 1" x 6" x 8' board into one 8" long piece for the floor. Cut the 1" x 4" x 8' board into two 10" long pieces for the sides of the roof.
- Assemble the box Using wood glue and 1 1/2" wood screws, attach the front and back pieces to the sides to form a rectangular box. Then, attach the floor to the bottom of the box using wood glue and 1 1/2" wood screws
- Add the roof Attach the two 9" long roof pieces to the top of the box using wood glue and 1 1/2" wood screws. Then, attach the two 10" long roof side pieces to the top of the box using wood glue and 1/2" wood screws.
- Create the entrance hole Using a 3" hole saw, cut a hole near the top of the front panel of the box. Make sure the hole is centered and about 3" from the top of the box.
- Install the perch Drill two 1" diameter holes through the front panel of the box, just below the entrance hole. Insert the 12" long dowel rod through the holes to create a perch for the screech owl.
- Sand and finish the box Sand all surfaces of the box to remove any rough edges or splinters. Then, paint or stain the box with a non-toxic exterior-grade finish.
- Install the box Mount the box on a sturdy post or tree trunk,
